Take a Walk

I am going crazy.  If I don't do something in the next five minutes to change

my life.   I'll just blow up!

If this is how you flee, then you need to move around a little.  It's surprising what a difference physical movement can make in an otherwise abstract, stuck day.  It's as if the mind were made to be in a moving vehicle.  Some people run or swim or lift weights or play team sports.  Any of these will work.  I walk.  I need physical movement for its release of stress.

You can probaly walk more in the course of an ordinary workday.  You can walk during a break, or yuo can walk the dog.  You walk in order to take deep breaths or to mutter at your day, to give your mind roaming room or to think of nothing at all.  You might even walk with a coworker or friend, or you might walk in order to be alone for a few moments.

Walking moves you out of stale space and puts you in contact with sounds and scenery that wake up your senses.  Walking relieves the physical tension that builds up when you've had to hunker over a computer half the day or sit in a meeting for two hours.

So before you blow up or visit the vending machine one more time, take a walk.  Leave your environment for ten minutes.  Swing yuor arms and breath deeply as you go.

Chickens Arrive at the SLC

Dear Tina,

It's been a busy month here at the Solar Living Institute.
Staff has been on the road touring as participants at the Solar Power 2008 conference in San Diego, and with the Bioneers in San Rafael. And we've hired 2 new employees, Shari Bainbridge in our accounting office, and Brenda Reed as our administrative assistant.  Meanwhile the interns have finished their latest project, building the chicken coop -- and the chickens have moved in!

There will be no let up this month. We're greatly anticipating the national election in less than a week and are anxious to welcome in a new era of emphasis on renewable energy production.   But even as the country goes to the polls, we're preparing for San Francisco's Greenfest Nov 14-16,with pre-conference workshops during  "Greenweek," Nov 9-16. Most importantly, don't forget our third annual Green Career Conference at the UC Berkeley campus, scheduled for Nov 22.

Keep an eye on the website solarliving.org, where our 2009 classes will soon be listed, some early next month. In January we'll have our full catalog published with workshops in Renewable Energy, Solar, Biofuels, Green Building, Permaculture and other topics for sustainable living.

As we wind down 2008 and strategize for next year and beyond, we are looking forward to many great opportunities - enhancing our intern program, improving our 12-acre demonstration site, upgrading our training facilities, generating greater involvement with the green collar jobs program, and preparing workshops that are better than ever.

But we do need your help. Please join us, either as a workshop participant, or as a financial partner. It is your support, through your contributions or efforts, that sustain our ongoing programs and let us help create a future we can all live with.

Good News for the RE Industry

Tax Credits Extended: Renewable Energy Industry Breathes Sigh of Relief

by Graham Jesmer & Stephen Lacey

The tax credit package...will extend the Production Tax Credit for one year and the Investment Tax Credit for eight years. The extensions would be at least partially paid for by a change in the tax code for the oil and gas industry. The bill also contains removal of the US $2,000 cap for residential solar installations.

"Solar is becoming a competitive energy source that can address our nation's growing energy demands with a clean, reliable and renewable source of power. The solar industry is now scaling up to bring down manufacturing and installation costs, build its infrastructure, grow public awareness, and attract customers. The 8-year extension of the solar investment tax credit will help the solar industry flourish to its full potential"

Blog EntryForgiveness OfferOct 25, '08 7:25 PM
for everyone

This is never going to be resolved to my satisfaction.

The other person won't see it my way, and I won't see

it any other way-that's just the way it is.  But we still

have to live in the world together.  I can't take

this emotional upheaval anymore.

Forgiveness is the solution to situations that have no solution.

When nothing else can be done, forgivenes still can be done.

When everything has failed, gotten too complicated, and left a

bad taste in your mouth, forgiveness is the one final step you can take.

Forgiveness is an act of letting go.  It's required for long-term

relationships, for effective ends of wars, and for heavy duty

healing.

Forgiveness is not what you do when someone has inconven-

ienced you, momentarily hurt your feelings, or broken your talilight.

Unless you're really petty, you can get over those ordinary

irritating moments that visit us alot.

No forgiveness is for hurt that is deep and bitter and inescapable

It's what you do when the confusion over who said or did what just

keeps getting more confusing.  When you can't forget about it, make up

as if nothing happened, or apply all those principles of conflict

resolution, all that's left is to let go and say,  "I forgive you.  I don't

understand why you've done this to me, I don't excuse it, and I'll never

really forget it.  But I forgive you, and it's time to move beyond this."

Jesus Christ was very big on forgiveness, and this was one

reason he stuck in the craw of alot of rigid, ply-by-the-rules people.

Forgiveness is what you apply when the rules are broken beyond

repair.

Today may be the day when you need to offer forgiveness for

wrongs--past or present, commited by loved ones or enemies--

that won't let you sleep or enjoy anything anymore.  Often, when

I say the Lords Prayer and come to the part about forgiving those

who trespass against me, I insert the names of a few people.  These

people have hurt me deeply, some of them years agao, and I

continue to practice forgiveness and will do so until the healing is

complete.  So I insert those names, in the way that stating my

intention to really forgive these people.  It's a small step, but I know

it will take many such steps to complete this particular journey.

Forgiveness begins simply when you decide to do it.  It hardly ever

happens all at once, but if youd ecide today that you will offer

forgiveness, you are on your way to healing

A little prayer for the next step

Forgiveness does not really fit any system that makes sense.

It's beyond the realm of justice, so I need some help with it.

Help me to say,"I forgive you, if only in my mind."  Help me

to say it out loud if thats what needs to happen.  Help me to say it

as many times as I need to, until it's true.

xo

for everyone

Watch these videos...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtIgbMQQU0U

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pu4Pyq3G4A

It's time to end this.  I keep trying to make things stay the way they've always been.  But it doesn't work, and I'm tired of trying.  I guess it's time to say good-bye.

When a thing is over, good-bye is the only response.

Don't make promises to stay in touch or to follow uo.  Don't try to make this relationship more long term than it's meant to be.  That sounds cold, but it's true; some relationships-whether business or romance-are meant to be short term, and to force them to be anything else is merely painful and awkward as hell.

And when good-bye means that the relationship is enterning a new phase, acknowledge the change.  You are saying good-bye to the old phase.  That coworker is moving across the country and she wont be in yuor office anymore.  Your child is moving out or getting married, and your relations ship is about to change irevocably.  You wont have the priveledge of all those informal talks in the course of coming and going.

Say good-bye wheter you will miss the person or not, whether you like the person or not.  Good-bye isnt about affection, its about closure.  It's a ritual that releases us from a present situation  or relationship, and generally it's a mutal release.  Saying good-bye shows respect for what has ended whether its a partnership or weekend retreat.

Say good-bye and let go. Trust that what has been done was good and that you have played a useful part in whatever is ending.  Now you can move on with freedom.

A Little Prayer For The Next Step

I wish life were more permanent, that I din't have to say good-bye so often.  I especially want the good things to stay in my life.  But someone always moves or somethign changes.  Help release my grip on the way things were.  Help me say good-bye in a good spirit.

Simple Thought

There's only so much you can learn in one place.

Blog EntrySay NoOct 10, '08 6:52 PM

When you say no, you wipe out a lot of possiblities.  That's why saying no is scary.  Maybe you would really make a good contribution to that organization.  Maybe your erving in this capacity today will open up a lot of other posibilites a year or two from now.  You have no way of knowing that, but it is a worthy cause.  Its easier to say yes than to say no.
Its difficult to say no to something thats totally good.  Its more difficult to back out later and leave a vacuum, to admit that you should have said no in the first place.
Saying no applies to a lot of situations.  You say no to turn down yet one more responsibilty that you have no time for.  But you also say no to people who are violating your personal boundaries.  You say no when you disagree with popular opinion.  You say no when your child wants to do something you know isnt ok.  You say no when someone is trying to go too far or push you too far.
No is a boundary, a limit, a cutoff, a saftey precaution.  No is good for us.  No is necessary.  No is also quite unpopular, because it always means someone is always left unhappy.  When you say no, you let people down, you disappoint them, you dont help out, you make someone mad, you introduce conflict.  Saying no is extremely scary business.
But an honest and wise no is the right thing to say.  An honest and wise no is just as powerful and good as any yes on any day.
Say no.  Say it gently as you need to.  But make sure it is clearly understood.

Slow Food vs Monsanto

Dear Tina,

As the nights begin to chill and the leaves turn color here at the Solar Living Institute, we're grateful for another great year. Our eight interns, and our newly arrived intern Maria Pia Gamboa, from Costa Rica, are busy harvesting the delicious organic and biodynamic produce that we've been growing all year. Our onsite produce makes up the lion's share of our interns' diet more than ever before this year. Our hard working staff is gearing up for a very busy fall event season. Last week we took our mission to the huge West Coast Green event in San Jose where Al Gore and Jerry Brown made inspiring presentations. It was great to see  and reconnect with so many members of our San Francisco Bay Area SLI family at the event.

In October you can come see us at Bioneers in San Rafael  October 17-19 where we'll have our annual booth to introduce Bioneers to the Solar Living Institute. Or come to San Francisco's "Greenweek", in conjunction with Greenfest, November 10-16 and check out the SLI-sponsored workshops and speakers.  Finally we're in the planning stages for our third annual Green Career Conference scheduled for Nov 22 on the UC Berkeley campus. This promises to be our best conference ever with Orion Walker, our Outside Events Coordinator putting the finishing touches on our speaker line up. Register online before October 15 and receive $50 off the registration fee (see below).

Our fall class schedule for workshops in Renewable Energy, solar, biofuels, green building, and permaculture is filling up fast. We have lots of classes both in the SF Bay Area and at the Solar Living Center. Check out the dates and syllabus below or on our full website: www.solarliving.org. Our workshop Director Diane Depuydt is hard at work finalizing our 2009 workshop schedule, so stay tuned for updates and to take advantage of early sign ups. We have once again shattered all records in workshop attendance and revenue, and it seems clear that the need for sustainable living education, from solar to strawbales, continues to explode. Diane is welcoming Erica Cooperrider and Alissa Browne on board, to help us with our ever expanding workshop program. Erica is one of the co-founders of the organic Ukiah Brewing Company and a well connected community member and organizer.  Alissa has been on SLI staff for just six months, and has been promoted to the workshop team.

We want to congratulate our new Interim Managing Director, Karen Kallen, who has been a star with the SLI for two years. Karen brings many years of non-profit and environmental experience and passion to her new position, and will be a steady guiding hand in steering the future course of the SLI.  Karen is taking the leadership baton from our departing Executive Director, Lindsay Dailey, who has decided to move on to other endeavors. We're grateful to Lindsay for pouring her heart and soul into the SLI over the past several years and we wish her good luck in her new ventures. We also welcome on board Albert Johnson, who has been promoted from his 3 months as an Intern to our Facilities Manager, with amazing carpentry and handyman skills.

We are excited to report that our 13th annual SolFest was better than ever, with huge crowds gathered once again to hear about everything under the sun, and enjoy world-class education, speakers and entertainment.  Our workshop program also continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

We are also proud to report that our solar education programs in Richmond, California continue to move forward.  Thanks to the generous support of the Sidney Frank Foundation and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the SLI is collaborating with some fellow visionary non-profits in the East Bay to train urban youth in green careers.  Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting program.

We've had a very successful year so far, and anticipate that the coming months will wrap up the best year ever for the SLI.  Please consider joining with us, as a workshop participant, or a partner supporting us financially. Thank you for your kind and enduring support!

Fall Brings A New Crop of Interns
With the change of the season, the Institute is happy to welcome a new group of interns to our site.  This group will be the last of 2008 and is composed of a diverse set of personalities that ensure that the Fall will be an exciting and productive time.  The staff is happy to introduce the following:

Ron Wiggins:  hailing from Atlanta Georgia, Ron is a firefighter on sabbatical to explore the worlds of fine furniture construction, world travel, and sustainable living.  He now joins the Institute as one of our hardworking workshop interns.

Haley Rotter:  a New York import, Haley is enjoying her first foray in California with the intention to find a means to apply her interest in public outreach and marketing to her work at the Institute and in the broader world.  She is also a hardworking team member of the workshop program.

Diane Matthews:  (pictured on right) from the Colorado Rockies, Diane comes to the Institute and northern California hoping to explore and gain experiences to further her personal values and educational goals.  She has been quick to master all that she encounters - including bread baking.  She is the third of the amazing workshop interns.

Nell Baldwin:  splitting time between the States and Germany, Nell brings an eclectic set of experiences and a passion for guerilla gardening to the Institute.  She has been shedding her luminous rays as a garden intern and the happiness of the garden reflects this glow!

Neil Mark:  our Canadian ambassador from British Columbia, Neil is our resident yogi and aspiring diesel mechanic.  He balances his many pursuits with a light heart and sound presence at the Institute.  He splits his time between helping the garden grow and keeping our landscape looking marvelous!

Jeremy Brissette:  arriving from southern California, Jeremy has spent his time exploring the wild lands of the country.  Be it the Colorado Rockies, Joshua Tree, or a 1972 camper traveling along the famous Al-Can Highway, he has been a true student of the natural world.  He brings his humility and appreciation to the Institute as a landscape intern.

Maria Pia Gamboa:  (pictured on left) from the beautiful natural treasure trove that is Costa Rica, Pia brings her enthusiasm and "pura vida" to the intern community in a distinct and wonderful way.  She is one of our overwhelmingly talented site maintenance interns and has been redefining natural building since her time at the Institute.

Josh Munger:  our electrical engineer, Josh hails from Oklahoma.  He has an amazing talent and passion for community and exploring his broader contribution to the world.  With plans to adventure through New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji after his internship, he is spending his time developing upon his strengths.  He is the second of our spectacular site maintenance interns.

for everyone

Today you're doing what you never do.  You're leaving the box that you believe is everyone's perception of you.  Today you're someone a little bit different.  You go someplace you've never visited.  You wear a bright color of lipstick--or none at all.  Or you buy a jersey of the hometown team and go to a game.  You hang out with people who have invited you several times, but you never took them up on it.  Someone says, "you want to drive out to Antique Country for a day?"  and you go along, even though you can live without old pieces of furniture that are beyond your budget.

We're much too concerned about who we are.  We're so protective of the image that others have of us.  Well, others don't think about your image nearly as much as you do.  So forget the "real" you today and have lunch with different people or go buy a pair of funky shoes.  Give up your perceptions of who you are, even if just for a day.

My grandma rearranged the furniture every few months.  She totally repainted things about that often too.  In the earlier years of her marriages, she and grandpa moved alot, right in the same town, first to this house and then another, fixing up eachone during residency.

Grandpas thing was cars,  We founda note he'd written to himself long ago, recording that he'dbought and sold eventy-two cars that year.

Some people change jobs often; others switch roommates.  But if you're not into drastic , smaller ones will do.  Sometimes all it takes is a new tablecloth to reorder your universe.  Or a new desk organizer. Some writers can start all over again whe we buy a new pen and a journal.

Every now and then, change things.  Buy a new backpack or reorganize your videotapes.  Eat dinner in a different part of your home.  Change what you've hung on the wals.  make a shift on one or two large items on your shedule.  Even a small change can be enough shock to your system that you'll be forced to take some deeper breaths.  It will give your creativity a chance to stretch its legs.

Find one thing to do this very day that will disrupt your little universe.  Stability is a good thing, but stagnation is not!

for everyone

Self-image is not an easy thing to change.  How you think about yourelf has alot of impact on how you act, so its in everybody's best interests for you to see yourself in healthy way.

You can't attain a healthy self-image with one littel exercise, but you can start with one.  Today find a quiet place to sit with a pen and paper, and take 15 minutes to write the story of your life.  That's right-- just 15 minutes to cover your whole life.  Write quickly so you can't think about it much.  You may be surprised at the choices you make when you have only a few minutes to summarize your life.

Now re-read what you've written.  What stands out?  What important things were left out?  Are there any surprises?  What makes you feel good, or not?

Now that you've done the initial exercise, you're ready to write about your life a few more times.  You can do this today or spread out the process over several days or weeks.  Everytime you write your story, choose a different part ot it to emphasize.  Concentrate on a certain period of your life.  Or write only about turning points, failures, accomplishments, friendships, losses or employment.  Each time you write, write for only 15 minutes and write quickly.

Along time ago I read a book about biographies, and it said that the best biographies do not recount a person's life chronologically or merely provide facts but are organized around a theme that emerges from ythe person's life.  In other words a good biographer edits out what does not serve the main theme.  Even the person's weaknesses and mistakes are presented in the context of that theme.  And some material is extraneous and doesn't need to appear at all.

You will discover that your life story contains many extraneous details.  Your life is multilayered, and not one but sevaeral themes will emerge as you explore your own history.  ALthough, you cannot undue hurtful events, you can rethink them in the context of your themes.  You can decide that certain events are not in the overall scheme of your life, as important as you have allowed them to be up to now.  And you can use the raw material of your history to create a theme for the rest of your story, starting today.
